A bearded dragon sounds like something out of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. Actually, it is a small reptile from Australia that has made it into the hearts, minds and homes of everyday people who happen to like lizards. I don’t exactly blame people who want to keep bearded dragons as pets, after all they are kind of cute as lizards go. Some people are quite attached to them, treating them as affectionately, the same as a cat or a dog.
Central and Eastern Bearded Dragon
The most common and popular species is undoubtedly the Central Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps). Shown on the right is the Eastern Bearded Dragon (Pogona barbata).
You need to take good care of them
These people religiously take care of their bearded dragons, and that’s a good thing because you need to do so. Bearded dragons don’t exactly eat dog food, or cat food, they need specialized nutrients and specialized foods that provided exactly the right amount of nutrition, in order to keep them healthy and happy.
So what do Bearded Dragons eat?
Well, they eat a lot of things. Among other delicacies that the bearded dragon likes to nibble on are fruits and vegetables, small animals like insects, grasshoppers and worms. There are a few species of worms that you can feed them, such as waxworms, superworms, butterworms and mealworms. If you can believe it, there is even fast food for bearded dragons. It’s crucial to keep the diet of a bearded dragon stable because if you don’t keep them tuned to a healthy diet, it’s easy for them to get sick. The last thing you want on your conscience is a sick bearded dragon.
Give them salads
With regards to fruits and vegetables, these little guys like to eat pretty much the same thing that you or I would like to eat. Although it seems rather funny to think of a bearded dragon eating a salad, this is one of the healthiest things that you can feed your bearded dragon.
Cut them in small sizes
They like collard greens, turnip greens, carrots, bok choy (which is a Chinese cabbage), alfalfa sprouts, strawberries, figs, blueberries and last but not least tomatoes. All of these fruits and vegetables are healthy ingredients to a bearded dragon’s diet. When you feed your lizard fruits and vegetables, you also have to be careful how you feed them, and make sure that you break down their snacks into dragon-size nibbles.
Bearded dragons also like to eat insects
The most popular insect food for a bearded dragon is the cricket. Due to the abundance of crickets, you can either go catch your own or buy them at your local pet food shop. Another tasty item on the dish for this pet is the ever present cockroach (not the kind coated with chocolate either).
Bearded Dragons surely love cockroaches
Finally if, you want to make your scaly chum happy, you can’t disregard worms. A bearded dragon will eat pretty much any kind of worm, but there are some worms in particular that they love the most such as mealworms. Again, mealworms can be purchased at your local pet shop. So keep your lizard happy, give it the food it needs and make sure that the pieces are bite-sized so they will be happy and healthy.
